UIL Region Marching Contest - Monday, October 16, 2006

UIL Area E 3A Marching Band Contest - Saturday, October 28, 2006- Calallen High School, Corpus Christi, Texas
The band hall was bustling with students dressed in their show shirts.  Different types of pants decorated the room: jeans, shorts, pajama pants, and anything else comfortable.  Those who are morning people were talking it up with their friends, while others quietly sat in their chairs and waited.  Mr. R quieted everyone asking them to take their seats.  Giving directions for the day's events before telling the students to load the charter buses.

Thanks Marion ISD for the great Charter Buses!

Excitement filled both buses as we started out on a trip to Calallen High School to compete against the top bands in our area.  These bands won region and made it to the UIL Area E 3A competition.   We relaxed, watched movies, talked and cut up on the 3 hour bus ride to Georgetown.  We stopped and ate lunch at Nueces Street Grill, paid for by the Marion Band Boosters, Inc.

Thank you Marion Band Boosters!

With our bellies full, we went on over to Georgetown and practiced for a couple of hours.

Loading the buses, we were back on the road for the last 45 minutes of the trip.  Anxiety filled the buses and we couldn't wait to get on the field and show them exactly what the Marion Bulldog Band was made of!

We drew a preliminary march time of 430 pm, with 2 other bands to perform after us before the results for the top 10 were announced.

We all waited anxiously as the bands from all the region sat in the visitors bleachers and parents and onlookers sat in the home bleachers.  The students, full of energy and waiting on the results, began doing the wave, and the parents would answer back with our own.  They yelled the spirit chants and we yelled back, this went on for 30 minutes until a silence fell on the crowd.

Results were in and they began by giving every band a participation award for being the Best of the Best in South Texas, Area E.

Now down to the final 10 bands to compete.  The band directors of the final 10 had been called to the judges box to draw numbers for the Final Performance Schedule.  So here are the final 10 as they times were drawn:

7:30 - Medina
7:47 - La Vernia
8:00 - Carrizo Springs
8:15 - Hondo
8:30 - Hidalgo
8:45 -  BREAK
9:00 - Port Isabel
9:15 - Rio Hondo
9:30 - Pearsall
9:45 - Crystal City
10:00 - Marion

Oh my gosh, you should have seen the crowds go wild.

WE MADE IT TO THE TOP 10!

*happy dancing in the isles and all around us*

Marion Students went back to the bus and we "Rode the Pony"  Congratulations Marion Band for making it into the final 10 for Area Competition.  We found out that we placed 9th in the top 10.  We knew we had to step up our game if we were going to get one of those top five spots to go on to compete at State.

The students ate dinner from subway, provided by the Marion High School Administration.

Thank You Administration!

Some of the students went back onto the buses and rested, while others walked around and spied on the competition.  Since we were going to be the last band to march, we felt that we drew our lucky number.

Mr. R called everyone together, gave them a pep talk and pointed out some of the things that needed to be polished in the final performance.

I can tell you, there was definitely some stiff competition as the band parents sat in the bleachers and watched the first 9 bands perform.  But that was alright, we don't mind stiff competition.

It's finally our turn.  Last but not least, and we performed our hearts out and gave the judges a show they would never forget.  We nailed it and had a superb performance!

After waiting anxiously for 30 minutes for the results to be announced, the judges were finally ready.

and the Top 5 bands moving on to compete at this years 2006-2007 State Competition are:

*Drum Roll Please*

1.  Hidalgo
2.  Medina Valley
3.  Port Isabel
4.  Crystal City
5.  Rio Hondo
Alternate: Marion

Of course, we were all devastated that Marion didn't make the final 5, but alternate is a good place to be and we actually moved up from 9th place out of 25 bands to 6th place out of the top 10.  I must say that is pretty dang impressive!  Of course we aren't expecting any of the bands to not make it, but you never know and it'll keep us on our toes!

Watch out 2008-2009!  We are gonna be State Bound again Baby!

Way to go band, and if you see any of the Marion High School Band students, give them a big pat on the back for a job well done!
